I don’t re-blog many posts on here, but I have shared a few from Eclectics, their blog has been well worth following for a constant stream of excellent guest mixes. I was also lucky enough to be invited to submit my own mix to their series a little while back.
Eclectics’ mix blog is a carefully curated mix series with a focus on quality and variety and has played host to the likes of DJs including Leo Mas, Simon Peter of Claremont 56 renown, Chris Coco, DJ Rocca, Shawn Lee, Max Essa and Coyote. Anyone with a passing interest in Balearic sounds will know these stellar names.

There is now another reason to follow the progress of the Eclectics team now – they have launched their own label & have started with a bang. Their debut release is by none other than Balearic legends Coyote. Well known for their music on the essential ‘Is It Balearic’ label as well as also releasing music on a range of other imprints, such as Balearic Social, their music is always worth checking.
Coyote – Too Late To Be Scared
The first release on Eclectics’ digital label, Coyote’s Too Late to be Scared is available across three mixes which cover a hell of a lot of ground – and at a variety of paces.
The Coyote’s original mix is a laidback treat, its slow, tribal beat and slinky bassline are complimented with layers of percussion while gentle acid lines float by, rising and falling along drifting synths that ebb and flow in the mix.
Next up is the tougher Dark Drift mix, dancefloor focussed and heavier the drums and bass build the foundations for a mid-paced monster. “It’s too late to be scared, it’s time to kill,” Christopher Walken declares in the sample used as a hook as this version tightens its grip with emphasised acid lines that rework the track into more of a mid-paced house anthem.
Lastly the ambient mix, drifts along, drums dispensed with just the cymbals used to progress the track. Spoken samples remain, “Every once in a while,” Walken intones, “the lion has to show the jackals who he is.” Walken preventing this track from drifting aimlessly, giving it a slightly darker hook that requires attention.
It’s Too Late to Be Scared by Coyote is released on Eclectics on 15th of May 2017. I’d suggest that the Eclectics label will be one to watch – if the standard of their mixes is any indication of the quality to come on the label – we are all in for a treat.
